Is it possible to carry out the following with WinME. ??

I have a 60G HD (FAT) with 30G free. Can I create a partition on a portion of the remaining space, move my MP3 files to the new partition (G:)? and reformat (C:) ready to install WinXP Home?

I realise the ideal situation would be to backup my mp3s to DVD and reformat the HD, then install XP but my DVD burner has packed in!

Thanks for any suggestions!

Absolutley. When installing, you have the option to select an existing partition. The install will not touch anything on other partitions.

Thanks cdogg. Can you suggest a method of creating a partition other than Partition Magic as it refuses to work on my system. Can it be done by Windows ME?

Problem solved: start/run/msconfig/disabled all startup items/ran scandisk corrected all errors/created partition!!

Potential problem?? Drive C: & Drive D: are FAT32, If I install XP on Drive C: in NTFS, I will have to convert Drive D: to NTFS, Partition Magic does not let me convert Drive D: to NTFS?? (Under ME)

OK now I have Win98SE on Disc C: Data on Disc D: and WinXP Home on Disc E:..If I no longer need Win98SE can I simply delete/reformat that Partition??

Not necessarily. First of all, the system's active boot files for XP are on the C: drive. If you deleted the C: partition, the BIOS wouldn't find the OS on startup. You could try changing the active primary partition to E:, but that doesn't always work.

Instead, it would be recommended that you remove the E: drive altogether. Then I would extend the space on C: and/or D: using Partition Magic, to take up whatever space E: was using. Finally, I would bootup using the XP CD. At the prompt to format the hard drive, you choose C: and NTFS. After it finishes, you are left with the only 2 partitions you need.

As for your previous question, XP can read NTFS, FAT, and FAT32 partitions. You don't have to convert your data partition to NTFS, unless you want to add security.
