Trying to partition a 40GB HDD so I have separate partitions for OS(s), applications and data, as well as a small partition on the 'end' for ghosting backup. One group of people say this is do-able and intelligent, the other side says OS and applications will be all mixed together and can't be separated. This side says in order for W98 to work w/additional partitions it must be installed on each partition.
I plan to use W98 and 2000. I also may use 2000 running in VMware, virtually, instead of a typical dual-boot - if VMware works as I think it should. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

Max I've put on one system is 3 installations of 98. No mixing. Everything independent. But it requires a partition manager and a boot manager, both of which come with partition magic along with an emergency boot disk for straightening out the bootstrap after each install.
This is how most of mine are set up, but I tend to crash things a lot, so keeping stuff separate is a plus. And the sharable partition has the 98install stuff so I can rebuild much faster.

CapDave - its certainly not necessary for win98 to be installed on each partition to be able to run apps installed on that partition. As long as partition filestore is 98 readable (ie, fat/fat32), you can install the apps on whichever partition you like. Remember though - most apps add/use registry entries (registry on system partition) and system files (system folder on system partition).

So, what you're proposing is perfectly viable.
