I have art files e-mailed to me as an EPS image. Many times when I try to open in illustrator I cannot open the file due to a parse error.

I assume that I am dealing with a placed image within illustrator rather than a file originated in illustrator.
The question is: is there anything I can do to open the file ?

Do you know in which program the EPS was created? If in Photoshop, there are a number of different 'flavours' of EPS and it could be one of the non-standard ones, like DCS. Unless you have access to Photoshop, I doubt that you will have much luck opening it in Illustrator until the file can be resaved (in Photoshop) as the type of EPS that AI can accept.

I have photoshop, corel and paintshop pro. Could not
open in any of them. It appears that a process color piece of art (probably bimapped image) was imported into illustrator and then the file was e-mailed to me as an illustrator eps. Again, the key is that the art really was not created in illustrator as a vector image.

I can sometimes an "offending operative" error message by editing the illustrator file in word pad. Parsing errors however are a growing headache.
