parse date in open office

I was able to download data from my business financial package to excel then had to parse the data to put the columns and rows in order. We have now converted to Open Office but can't figure out how put the data in order after the download.

Hmm, could you elabourate a bit about this 'download' process?

Do you mean export to a text format and then import in excel?

If you import into Open Office you have to select the input file type carfully, whereas excel is much better at guessing what format the input file is.

I am downloading from unix based financial system to Open Office with a file that needs to be formatted so that it can be manipulated in OpenOffice. In Excel we always called it parsing, to structure the columns in a usable fashion.

Of course, I understand now. Have you got an example of the content that you could paste here?

For instance if its the 'comma space value' text format, you need to choose that as the input file type from the drop down box. If its tab separated you need to choose the 'text comma space value option' and then you get the same wizard excel presents allowing you to choose the separator etc.
