parallel device timeout with plotter

I'm having a problem with getting my dad's plotter to work in windows. He's using Win 98, autocad Map (which is essentially autocad 14; has the full version). I have the most current driver from Autodesk for this plotter (calcomp Designmate 3036) and have it in the right directory and have selected it under FILE, PRINTER SETUP, ETC. but I'm getting nothing. I've done a binary reduction on all the hardware and I'm pretty sure it can't be the cable, ports, switchboxes, plotter ('cause everything works under DOS on my dad's other machine).

What happens is when I go to plot, it goes through it's time delay thing that you set under setup (~60 sec), then it brings up an error box with the message "parallel device timeout"

The plotter uses an ADI driver so it's not actually setup in windows as a printer option under the PRINTERS folder. I guess it's just supposed to take hold of the port and go.

Any help you can give me would be much appriciated. Thanks in advance.
