Pagefile Recommendations

I have 4GB of RAM running on Windows 2003 Standard Server R2 x32. The "Recommended" pagefile size is 6142, but the pagefile was set 2048Min 4096Max.

Should I leave it as is, or should I change the Min Max to 6142?

Where is the limit to size of the PageFile.

I do not know the limit, but I would definitely set the min/max to the same size to avoid fragmentation. So in your case, I would use the 6GB min and max.

That is what I was thinking, but I didn't want to set it too high and have too much caching.

I searching Google and this forum and couldn't find anything regarding this. I just found the typical 1.5 times the RAM, but wanted to get some real world feedback.

Usually it depends on what your running, I have seen some apps take as much memory as possible and "eat away" at the pagefile. Since the maximum pagefile size can only be 4GB in size on each partition, in order to get a pagesize of 6142MB you would have to split it betweeen two partitions.
I would recommend you set it initially to 2048MB and monitor it. Hope this helps.

You said that the max is 4GB. Does that mean that even though it allowed me to set a 6142 pagefile, that it will only use 4096 of that?

Your pagefile can be any size but there is a Windows limitation that only allows a pagefile to be 4096MB per partition. If you need a pagefile of 6142MB you are going to have to split the pagefile between partitions (ex: C: 2048MB and D: 4096MB). Hope this helps.
