I have a compaq armada laptop the I installed win xp on, it had win 98 on it...my husband uses it when he goes on the road he is a truck driver, and after his last trip he found he could not view any web pages at all it gives a page cannot be displayed error and I have tried everything to fix it but have not managed it yet can someone please offer some help here??? I would so appreciate it!!!!

Need more info.

What type of internet connection (cable, dsl, dialup)?
Are you getting an IP address?
Can you ping by IP? By url_name?

Please provide as much info as you can.

I'm sure myself or one of the other excellent folks here can help you.

ok first off I am not a computer genius...sorry wish I was...LOL...ok hubby installed a bridge at a hotel he was at and after that it would not pull up any web pages...I am on a cable connection, with a router connecting multiple computers and his is a wireless as is mine...his shows it is connected thru the wireless connection and his yahoo and aim messengers will connect and work fine but when you open the browser to pull up a web page it gives a page cannot be displayed error message no matter what page you go to...thanks for any help and I hope I didn't make it worse to answer my question...

A couple things to check:

1. Proxy settings
Open IE
Click Tools | Internet Options
Go to Connections tab
Click LAN Settings
Un-check anything there

2. Ping tests
Click Start | Run
Type 'cmd' | OK
This opens a DOS window
Type 'ipconfig'
Should have valid IP address (not 0's or 169.254.x.x)
Type 'ping 4.2.2.2'
Should get replies
Type 'ping yahoo.com'
Should resolve to IP address and get replies

Post back here with results

Ok did all that and everything got replies back with no problems no lost data 4 sent 4 recieved on each of the 2 steps above...still not able to get a web page to show...still get page cannot be displayed error

If the proxy setting were good, then you probably have either a virus or a particularly bad case of spyware/malware.

Locate your hosts file and rename it.
Should be:
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Rename this file to hosts.old
Reboot

that didn't work either...there were a lot of files in that folder that all had the word host in them...and because I can't get online I can't do an adware scan....I have no idea what to do now...

Ok, you said you had other computer on your home network...

Go to one of the other computers to download the programs listed in the faq below, put them in a share folder that the sick computer can get to. If that is not possible, maybe burn them to a CD.

ok I'm working on downloading all that stuff but here is what the properties say on the browser for the cannot find server pages...under protocol it says unknown protocol and under address it says res://C:\\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#

I think we've pretty much elimated a network connectivity problem.
Because you can ping yahoo.com and get replies, that eliminates a DNS problem.

The only thing left is Internet Exlorer itself or a spyware/malware issue.

You may also want to try to repair windows. Boot to the CD and do a repair install.

One thing that you may want to try open the internet options through the tools on Internet Explorer and click on the Advanced tab then look for and uncheck "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions (requires restart)" then click Apply then OK. If you then are able to access web pages then you have spyware and need a spyware removal tool. Spysweeper is an excellent program (

click on the downloads tab look for "Try IT' and then click on spysweeper, download it and install..make sure you update the defenitions (you only get one chance in the trial version)if you miss the updates..just uninstall and reinstall then perform the updates. If at this point you are still have problems..click on start/run and type in cmd then click ok and then type in ipconfig /flushdns this will flush the dns table.

Delete the bridge. Right-click the bridge definition and Delete. Note this possible error messsage:

I have tried the spyware remover and I have removed the bridge....guess I am doomed to try to reformat the computer
