After upgrading 1 FE box to Exchange SP2 and then the clustered back end boxes to Exchange SP2 when users try to access OWA you get the HTTP 500 internal error. On the FE box there is an error in the event log number 929 and the error message matches this MS doc;
Having followed that all appears as it should be

The FE is not in a dmz but published by an ISA box, all boxes run Windows 2003 SP2 which was already installed when exchange sp2 was installed.

Just to clarify what I meant as part of the above did not seem to read quite right;
all boxes run Windows 2003 SP2 which was already installed when exchange sp2 was installed

What I actually meant was Windows 2003 SP2 had been applied to the servers a couple of weeks before Exchange SP2 was installed.

Ah, had to re-enable Inherit security permissions..... on the BE server objects.
