Overlay software workaround

I moved a client's old hd to a new machine. The old bios required overlay software (WD's Ontrack Disk Manager). The purpose here is simply to extract the old data: we can then fdisk and reformat the drive to FAT32.

As mentioned in other posts on this subject, Win98 doesn't assign a drive letter, etc.

Is there a utility available to extract that data, without going through installing the overlay and such?

Thanks in advance,

Kent

The utility is on the disk that came with the new HD, or you can find any number of them on the HD's mfg website.
They're often included with the drive overlay program. (Ontrack Disk manager is one). Cheers,

...or use the old machine, backup the data, and proceed with the new machine...? :)

As an alternative, create a boot disk, do the overlay to the boot disk. At floppy boot the drive should become available and you do the extraction through DOS.
One of the choices running the overlay software is to install it to a bootable floppy. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Follow up and thank you:

The client's old machine was non-functioning and he had lost the installation disk.

So thanks to you all, my solution was to download the overlay manager from WD, then use the downloaded utility to readjust the disk. I had to install the overlay to the new machine's boot sector, then undo the 63 sector offset on the old disk, then remove the overlay. But it works, and the guy is happy.

Appreciate everyone's input.
