A question has been raised in my company regarding what the overhead of running sql profiler is.... I am looking for a white paper or some sort of documented benchmarking around this activity.

I have looked over the net to no avail, does anyone know of a resource? Paul

We run SQL Profiler and SQL Trace on both SQL 7 and 2000. Generally, we run Profiler on a workstation while Trace always runs on a server. We haven't noticed any performance degradation. However, we haven't done extensive or controlled testing so I can't give you benchmarks.

Here are some links to check. You can probably find more articles if you do a web search for SQL Trace and/or SQl Profiler.

This article mentions the reduced overhead of Profiler in SQL 2000 compared to SQl 7.

The article at this link discusses improvements to SQL Trace and Profiler.

The next article discusses using extended stored procedures to reduce overhead.
