I sent a file to my boss using MS Outlook. When he just clicks on the email it locks up his Outlook and I have to end task Outlook. Is there a way to delete the email? You cannot open the email because it locks up as soon as you click on the email. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you right-click on it and then select Delete ?

this is for outlook express 5 and i know this works if you have a huge file in your outbox, i've changed a few of the steps for you so you could create a test account and try to see if it works on the inbox aswell.

first goto your inbox and move any mail that you need to a different folder, now go to your outbox and stay there. Go to tools > options and then it that window go to the maintenance tab and click the button that says folder store. A window will pop up with a location something like c:\windows\ application\data\indentities\{?????????-????-????-????-???????}\microsoft\outlook express, you need to copy this. close outlook, go to windows explorer and paste it into the location bar, you should now see loads of .dbx files with one called inbox.dbx, delete this, dont worry the indox recreates itself. Open outlook and go to your inbox which should be empty, copy the mail you saved to another folder back to your inbox.

hope this helps

I cannot right click on the file because it will lock up Outlook as soon as I click(left or right). Miguel, I appreciate your help but we are not using Outlook Express, we are using Outlook 2000. Does this make a difference, if it doesn't, then I can try your suggestion.
Thanks,
Lonnie

i'm not sure if it will work with outlook 2000, but you've got nothing to lose, just create a test account and give it a go

Miguel,
When I go to the Outbox and click on tools>options, there is no maintenance tab there. Thanks for the help.

Assuming you have an Exchange server running can you go to another machine and access the mail from that machine and see if you have the same problem?

Or he can give you temporary delegates access to his inbox to see if you can delete the message from his inbox. joegz

We are running Exchange, but how do I go to another machine and and access his mail?

Is your boss using Preview for his email? If you disable this feature it should make it possible to delete the email that is causing Outlook to lock up. When using the preview pane Outlook will download the message to the local machine temporarily. If that doesn't work first I'd blow the profile by removing the Exchange server and readding it. If that doesn't work just add the user's profile to another machine. Retype the mailbox and exchange server under another computer. -Brad

You will either need his password or the Exchange admin will need to set you up with permissions to access his account. Once you have one or the other than setup a new profile in Outlook (for instance on your machine) that will access his account on the Exchange server.

If you are using his password then set NT authentication to none in the properties of the Microsoft Exchange component (under Advanced) so that you will be prompted to logon as him for that Outlook profile.

If the Exchange Admin will give you permissions then you should just be able to add his mailbox as a secondary mailbox so you can see his mailbox (although you will have to relogon to the network to pick up permissions granted to you.) joegz

Thanks everybody for the input. I finally got it with BradSQLGuy's tip about turning off preview. I did this and then went and deleted the email. Thanks again for the responses.
