Outlook XP on 2000

I recently upgraded to Office XP on my 2000 machine. It's all working well except that if I am downloading a large number of emails Outlook seems to not only stall but bring the entire machine to a standstill.

Any ideas on why this is happening? Is there a "time-out" setting that I need to adjust?
