Outlook won't remember password

One of the pc's in our office refuses to remember the email password. As such it won't automatically check for email and download any new coming in.

Any suggestions?

outlook 2002:

steps in MSKBQ 259416 OR 290684 didn't work in my situation, after rebooting; using the mail CPL applet to input the password and checking 'remember password' resulted in exactly the same bug. i also tried appying office service pack as advised in Q301475, refused to patch.
