I need some initial confirmation that what I want to do is possible, before I spend a lot more time on it. Don't need any code (yet!).

I've reviewed and harvested a lot of code already that generally runs through an Outlook folder and saves messages and/or attachments to other disk locations, and should be able to use some of this.

The environment is Outlook 2003. What I want to do is have something custom on the message's toolbar or menu when an individual message is being viewed. If the user clicks that selection (button, preferrably), the code will gather some info from the user, determine a storage location, do a Save As... of the message as a .MSG type, and perform some SQL update queries to let another application know this item is out there. Control returns to the user, who can then delete that message or move on to the next one.

I hadn't found anyone trying to act on the specific mail item being viewed, but lots of stuff to scan all mail in a folder and take actions.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the concept, advice, gotchas, etc. Users are doing this manually now (save as, then go into the other app to link in the saved msg), but I'd like to automate it to encourage more of this.

Thanks in advance!

Jim

Never mind...Found specific code I needed within minutes of posting this. I guess framing the question improves the search terms.

I'd still be interested if anyone has any great insights on this type of process.
