in my contacts. When I go to type a name in the To: field for outgoing mail, Outlook suggests names to use. The problem is that when I choose the name from the list, the email does not match that in my Contacts list. For example I have a John Smith in my contacts, with the email address john@home.com, at one point John had an email address of johnS@home.com but it has been deleted from the contacts. When I go to compose a message to John, his name is suggested by Outlook as I type in the To: field. Well, when I click his name it brings up the old address. Does Outlook keep a cache, and why wouldn't it give me two John's as a suggestion with one pointing to each address? I want it to simply look at the contacts and suggest from the people listed there, it is possible? Thank you all in advance for your time and efforts.

Outlook does not keep a cache of old addresses but are you certain that it is doing the name check in the correct order? Do you have contacts listed first or some other component?

If you are Outlook XP go to TOOLS - ADDRESS BOOK and then click TOOLS - OPTIONS to see the order.

For Outlook 2000 go to TOOLS - SERVICES - ADDRESSING.

Rokerij: The problem is that it's pulling up an address of a contact that is no longer in my system, they have been deleted completely and re-added with a new address. The auto complete that suggests names still brings up the old address, and not the new one. Even though the old one is deleted from the Contact list. Thanks again for your help.

I stand corrected after a little more research. Outlook XP does use a name cache.

Try doing this to see if it may resolve your issue. Go through the same process to pull up the incorrect address and then ARROW DOWN to the incorrect address and delete it.

I have yet to find how to possibly clear out the entire cache.

Found it. It is the NK2 file that controls the name cache information. If you rename the NK2 file, logoff, log back in and restart Outlook it will recreate the file brand new thus purging the cache.

You will find the file under Documents and Settings\userid\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook It will have the same name as your profile.

If it is only one name then just use the delete option as previously suggested.
