Outlook re-downloading POP messages

So I had some problems with my POP mail server and re-installed a bunch of stuff last weekend. When I went into outlook today and hit send/receive, it is trying to get all 3000 messages that i have saved on the server, even though only 5 or so are new.

Any idea how to make outlook not download the previously read messages?

Outlook 2002 downloads duplicate e-mail messages from a POP mail server

When you check for new messages or let Outlook 2002 automatically check for new messages from a POP mail server, Outlook may download the same message several times from the POP mail server. This problem occurs even if you have clicked to clear the Leave message on server check box.
