Dear all:
I am trying to archive my users' Outlook PST files by year. However, after I archved an archive file of 200 MB from a 1GB outlook.pst, my outlook.pst is still 1GB.

I do not see size reduction in archiving... I am not sure what I am missing... because I tried on my own desktop and it worked out fine, but for my users outlook.pst seems to remain same size after archiving.

Did I miss any step ? @_@

Compress the PST file after archiving, then you'll see the difference.

Hey Lander,
Hope you don't mind me jumping in but, after the file has been compressed, would the clients still be able to work with this file? or is compressing the only way the system will recognize the reduction?

Compressing it is just a util to clean up any unused space. After the PST is compressed the user will continue on without noticing any difference.

Yeah, compressing is the way to go.

I did archiving on Windows Server and without my awareness of compressing the pst file, the file size got shrinked down, but this does not work in Windows XP Pro. That is why I am wondering whether I did something wrong.

Thanks for the replies =)

PS for hebbs5:

The compression lander is talking about is done from INSIDE Outlook. It is NOT the XP (or other) file compression.

Yeah, sorry, didn't think about the file compression. In Outlook, right click on your PST folder and choose Properties, click Advanced and then choose "Compact Now". That is the compression I was talking about.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hey Lander,
Thanks for replying back. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you but just got back from holidays.
That's the answer I was looking for.
Thanks, Hebbs
