Ok, I have to use outlook at work instead of my preferred OE. I hate most everything about it and cannot find a lot of options.
1st, how do i turn off the personalized menu thing? Can't stand having to click that arrow.
2nd, how do I make it show the pop up box when sending and receiving?
3rd, how can i make it check for mail on startup and go directly to my inbox?
4th, why doesn't it finish an email address when i start typing one in to a new email and how can i fix it?
Thanks,
Outlook hater

1. To get the full menu every time, open Word or Excel, click on Tools, Customize, click the Options tab and remove the check mark from 'Menus Show Recently Used Commands First', and click the Close button. The setting holds for all Office programs.
2. Tools-Options-Preferences-Email Options, check the box that says "Display a notification message when new mail arrives"
3. Part a. If you are connected to an Exchange server, it should receive messages at startup and in almost real time.
Part b. Tools - Options - Other - Advanced options - make sure the "Startup in this folder" says INBOX.
4. Turn on automatic name checking - Tools-Options- Preferences, click E-Mail Options, and then click Advanced E-Mail Options.Select Automatic name checking check box.
Then all you have to type is enough for the address book to find a unique entry, and it will fill in the rest of the address as soon as you tab to the body of the email.Example, if you only have one mike, just type mike, and start typing the subject line, it will finish your address.

ok, most of that worked. It still does not fill in the email address when i type. The box was already checked too.
But you go most of it, thanks.

These parts did not work:
2. Tools-Options-Preferences-Email Options, check the box that says "Display a notification message when new mail arrives"
4. Turn on automatic name checking - Tools-Options- Preferences, click E-Mail Options, and then click Advanced E-Mail Options.Select Automatic name checking check box.

The first one or #2 just pops a box up after receiving email that says "new mail has arrived, would you like to read it now?"
I am trying to get outlook to show me the box that shows a progress bar as mail comes in, like OE does. It did it when I first installed but I check the "hide this box" and can't get it back.
The auto-finishing of typed addresses does nto work.

On 2. If you are connected to an exchange server in the office, the delivery will be so fast you probably won't be able to see the progress bar.

I don't think Outlook will do an auto-complete, but it does auto checking which means you only have to type enough to identify the address entry, then you can go on to other fields and it will finish your address then (auto-name checking).

I think eventually you will find that Outlook is a "grown-up version" of OE. For business use, it is much more powerful, although we have to suffer a little in the user-friendly arena.

I am not connected to an exchange server, i figured out the registry settings to fix that portion.
The autocomplete thing does not work at all, but no big deal.
I realize that outlook is a "grown up" version of OE, but I do not need all the other features, all i want is a simple email client, I use other software for calendaring, tasks and reminders.
Outlook is a heavy application that takes up much more of my computer resource to run than OE does.
It's kinda like driving the RV Camper one block down the street to the store for a pack of gum. All i really needed was my bike.
