Outlook - need permission to delete from another user's mail file

This is my first post on this forum, thank you for any advice you can offer.

My company uses MS Outlook. I have an Outlook email file which resides on my PC at my desk. My boss has an Outlook email file which resides solely on the laptop in his office. I am able to view his emails and all of his folders. How can I have the capability to delete emails from his mail file and/or move items from his inbox into his personal folders?

I'm so sorry, I forgot to specify that I'm trying to delete and move emails from his mail file from the PC at my workstation!!!

Your boss can give you delegate access to the inbox (assuming thee is an Exchange server being used) but you will not be able to access the personal folders. Personal folders can not be shared so that two people can access them at the same time. joegz

How can he (i.e., me) do this? I have full access to his workstation. Last week, I was playing around with permissions in the properties section, but still, I cannot delete his emails.

Can you please give me step by step instructions?

You have to first log in to your bosses mailbox in outlook and go to his "outlook today" properties and specify the role permissions. After this is done you will need to go to the properties of his (Inbox, Sent Items, etc) and give you the role permissions that will allow you to delete. You would have to do this in 2 places. (1) The "Outlook Today" properties and (2) Go to the properties of his Inbox, or whatever box you want to have permission to delete his mail. Once this is done than you will be able to delete his mail from your workstation. You would have to make sure you add him to your mailbox by going into Tools==>Services==>Microsoft Exchange Server (Click on Properties)==>Advanced==>Add your bosses mailbox here

Now you will be able to view your bosses mail and whatever folder you have permission to you will be able to delete.

zoey, thank you. I have a couple of questions...

1. I don't understand what you mean by "Outlook Today". I have his mailbox open, where do I go from here to get to "Outlook Today"?

2. What role, specifically, must I assign to myself to be able to delete emails? Author, Editor, etc???

When logged into outlook, on the left hand side under the folder list (click on "View" and then "Folder List&quot you will see at the very top "Outlook Today", "Mailbox name". You have to go into the properties here and setup the role you will have to this mailbox. You may need "Editor" role or "owner" role. This should give you enough permissions to delete.

I spoke too soon - sort of.

I have Outlook Today, but he doesn't. I'm running MS Outlook 2002, he's running '97. My Outlook Today is just above my Inbox and a few other folders on the file tree. I can't find his anywhere.

Sorry to hear that. Just retrace the steps you took yesterday and verify. Check out the article I listed. A better way to do this. You have outlook2002. Can you have your boss login to your workstation (unless you can login as an Exchange Administrator on your workstation and login to users mailboxes) and then setup his outlook profile on your workstation. Then login to his outlook, and now you will see the "outlook today". Recheck the permissions here. Then check the permissions on the other folders (I.E - Inbox). Then log back in as yourself and see if you can delete
