Hi All . I have an exchange 5.5 server which was put in place about 2 months ago, its a high end server and running off a 100mb nortel switch. Nearly everyone in the office is running at 100mb also, but most of the time when i go to open either an old or new mail it takes about 10 seconds to open, I have norton antivirus running in real time but Symantec say that this wouldn't cause this issue.......any ideas TKS

By any chance do you have a NAV client with Exchange module on PCs? Try to disable Exchange real time module.
We also switched from MAPI/VAPI to MAPI only autoprotect mode.

If you are running NAV for Exchange in MAPI/VAPI mode, this could be the reason. If new definitions have been installed on the server since a message was last opened, NAVEX will rescan the message when it is opened, causing a delay. Another user says that they switched from MAPI/VAPI to MAPI only, but I strongly recommend against this action. The reason is that the MAPI scan engine can be pushed into the background during heavy mail traffic. This will mean that messages are not scanned. The VAPI engine will not get pushed into the background, thus ensuring that all messages are scanned.

You can determine if NAVEX is the cause by stopping the service temporarily. If messages open normally, NAVEX is the cause. I don't know what version of NAVEX they are up to now (I've been looking for new work for the last 6 months), but I found 2.17 to cause problems with the DMS version of Exchange 5.5. Version 2.16 did not cause any problems.

I hope I've been of some help.
