Outlook - marking messages as READ

I would like to mark messages as "READ" as soon as I select (highlight) them. I have only have 3 ways of marking messages this way in the options menu, but none of these seem to work the way I want (have to open the message first). Am I missing something? Thanks.

I think this will only work if the Preview Pane is visible.

Then go to the Other tab in Outlook's Tools -> Options to configure the Preview Pane to mark the message as read. It has three different ways of doing it so have a play about and see how you get on. Sounds like you want the first option ("Mark messages as read in preview window") but you might want to set the timeout to 0 seconds.
