RFC 821 requires an email server to support IPv4 literal email addresses in the form of USER@[IP ADDRESS]. MS KB193316 describes how to create a proxy email address on Exchange Server to accept such an inbound address. However, Outlook will not send a message addressed in that format. A message window pops up saying Outlook does not recognize.... Even if I create a contact with that email address, Outlook does not recognize it.

I'm running Oulook 2002 so it should be compliant with the latest standards. Any suggestions?

I have Outlook 2000 and had no trouble sending in that format (although it didn't go because I didn't configure my server to accept such an address).

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Remember Outlook2k is absolutely shocking for anything and everything which isn't standard SMTP mail via exchange! Have you tried using a 3rd party app thro it?

Sorry no help what so ever just blowing off steam!!!!!

Well, this is bafeling. I tried it on OL2002 with Exchange Server and with OL2000 with POP3 at home. both failed. From another "lounge" forum I got the suggestion to create a throwaway address ala anybody@anywhere.com, wait for Outlook to resolve it (it gets underlined), double click it then overwrite the email address with the [ip address] format. Amazingly, it works.

I guess kludges are SOP for MSO!

I like Outlook, really I do, but this kind of nonsense: ( Standard rant and rave follows)

The all knowing Knowledge Base seems silent on this issue.
