After making an online purchase, I have noticed an increase in unwanted solicitions via email. I placed them on my "blocked senders" list and even added the domain name "@mail.ru, etc). Messages still come thru...can anyone help?
It seems to be better to filter junk e-mails straight to the bin rather than blocking. Maybe the spammers can distinguish between "blocked" messages that have been returned, and those that are returned because the e-mail address is invalid.
Nonetheless it is hard to escape any which way. I have also had randomly generated addresses targeted to my ISP so everyone who has an email address starting with "pet" cops this.
The best advice is to get a Hotmail or Yahoo address for use in any public space (e-mail registrations etc...), dont put your e-mail on any web pages, and to filter e-mails to send the junk to the bin.
There are also some anti-spam programs around of two types. One just makes the filtering option more user-friendly and I dont see any advantage over doing it manually. The second sort collates and pools your block-list data with all its other users to create a continually updating "master list" for blocking. This sounds smarter to me, but I havent tried one yet.
The blocked sender list is quite ineffective because spammers are always changing their 'from' address. Here's some info about creating mail rules. One of these days I'll write a FAQ.
