I have a remote user who is having difficulty with Outlook Express 6.0. When he sends email, he gets the following error message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxx@xxxx.com'. Subject 'test', Account: '68.22.139.98', Server: '68.22.139.98', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for 'xxxxx@xxxx.com', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

This would suggest that emails are not going through - but they are - and I'm stumped!

I've tried checking SMTP authentication and SSL settings, but they're all set up correctly.

Anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas? Let me know!

Sounds like they are trying to send email using one service provider through a email server of another service provider. To prevent spammers from using their email servers many providers will not allow you to send email unless your IP address is one of their assigned addresses. Say for example your email account is with Road Runner but you are on a Verizon connection. The Road Runner email server will allow you to download but will reject any attempt to send mail because the IP address your trying to send from is not one of their assigned IP addresses.

Okay. What do I need to check on this? User name?

The user is connecting to his corporate email account. I can't find any issues with his setup (at least not over the phone) ...

Let me see if I have this right. The remote user is attempting to access the server from the outside via the internet? If he is, then the server is set up to reject relaying through the email server. That is why you get the message "Unable to relay". The reason for this is to prevent spammers from using the server to do mass mailings. It has nothing to do with the user account credentials. You need to find the setting on the server that will allow relaying.

Well, I'd think that was the case too, except that none of my other users have this issue.

Besides, as I mentioned before, the emails ARE going through - he's just getting the message that they're not. That's what makes this such a confusing error.
