When openning MS outlook 2000 (on laptop running XP), an error message is generated:

Unable to start processing services. Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. (exchange 5.5 SP4).

This error message only occurs when the user connects from home over DSL (his profile is set up for corporate email).

A checkpoint firewall is in place, but no other users are experiencing this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Andy

Hi,
A few questions,
This is definetly to do with his DSL set up.
Can he get on the network over DSL?
Can he ping the mail server when hes on the corporate network?
Is everyone else who connects in this way set up the same way?

Everything works fine when he is connected in the office.

He can ping the mail server and it resolves the reverse lookup successfully over his DSL connection. He can also connect to the intranet from home without a problem.

All users are set up the same way, but none of the others have any problems.

Hi,
Did u recreate his outlook profile on the laptop....
also, and I know that this may sound a bit inpractical....but can u "loan" him a laptop for an evening with his profile set up on it? Ask him to connect through that one and see if he has the same issues with his mail. This may be impractical, if so disregard it, but if u could do it it would either narrow down the issue to his laptop or the line.

I didn't change anything in outlook because it works fine while in the office. The closest thing I can find on MS site was that his offlog files were corrupt.

I do have a junky laptop I can give him...I'll see if it works and let you know...thanks.

You say his laptop is XP. Does he have the Internet Connection Firewall, which comes with XP, turned on? If so, turn it off and see if that helps.

Sorry to hijack your post, but we had a similar issue a few weeks ago. The user kept saying he didn't have any other firewalls except the one we configured for him. We finally had him bring his laptop into the office and lo and behold.

Cheers.

Thanks cmeagan656, any help is greatly appreciated.
Hopefully this is the issue.

I am having this same issues and have had the same problem on multiple laptops. All have worked fine on the office LAN but when VPNed in from home I get the Unable to start processing services.

My system is currently an XP running Outlook 2000, but have had the same problem on Win2k with Outlook 2000.

Both laptops have also had the Cisco Systems VPN Client installed, but this is not used to connect to office VPN. Standard MS VPN is used. The Cisco client has installed a Deterministic Network Enhancer on all network connection. I have found turning this (NetworkEnhance) on and off occasionally allows the Outlook connection work.

I am also sitting behind a Netgear FR314 firewall/router.

Does anything here sound similiar to anyone else?

The end user didn't mention that he has a wireless private network behind his DSL modem and was NATing a few computers. The wireless router also has its own firewall built in and certain ports were shut off. He made a few changes and it seems ok now.

Thanks for all your help though...
