Outlook Email Format - Best format?

I need confirmation, or at least advice as to which format is best used for email when using MS Outlook. In a previous company, I was told that Rich Text format was the safest as it does not carry virus'. Using Word or HTML is more likely to do so.

Is this correct? Or is there any more meet on the bones to these arguments?
