I know smtp users port 25, but if I want an outlook client to connect back to an exchange server over a VPN connection, do I allow port 25 out to that server? Clients are Outlook 2000.

hello,

the communication between outlook and an exchangeserver needs you to open a lot of ports (smtp is only the port for sending emails). if you send and email via outlook and an exchange server, outlook does not use port 25. only the exchange server sends out the email via port 25.

please check the website or google for the needed ports (there are a lot of high ports).

No, once VPN tunnel has been established no additional ports need to be open.

Yes, I assumed it was Windows Server VPN (GRE and port 1723 on PIX), if so no other ports to worry about.

ok i understand :)
