outlook 2Gb personal folder archive limit?

Having saved email for some years to a personal folder I now find that there is a 2Gb limit (I'm told) and outlook will no longer open once that size is reached.

Any ideas how to recover or even split into smaler files? other than just cut the file size losing unknown emails....
