I’m having problems with Outlook 2002 (XP) when I change users. The first time a user invokes the beast it throws a ‘Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library’ error as follows…

Debug Error!
Program: C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE
Abnormal program termination

And then dies. Subsequent calls to the program are okay for that user. The next user that calls it suffers the same fate.

I’ve tracked the problem down to Norton Security 2004 which I recently installed and suspect the Firewall bit rather than the AV. When I remove it again the problem goes away.

I’m running on WinXP SP1a, Office XP SP2 and all the MS patches.

Does anybody know a way round this other than buying a different security product.

HI,

I too have this problem and can replicate it on three machines all with clean installs...!!!

According to Symantec, there is no problem as they cant reproduce the problem. I cant find any other posts or comments on either Microsoft or Symantec.

If you find anything, please let me know and I will do the same.

:-)

Thanks Jupitor; One of my buddies at work has XP Pro SP1a and norton 2004 and does not suffer the same fate. In his case he is not up to date with the MS patches so I assume the problem lies within one of these. I've not researched the matter further.

My solution to the problem was simple. I'm the only one in the house that uses the calendars and stuff on Outlook (because I use it at work all the time) so I've put the other family accounts onto Outlook Express. Problem raises it's ugly head no more because I'm the only user of Oulook on the box.

I'll keep my ears open for a solution.

I am having the same problem. Any solutions yet?

Thanks for your comments bonifale,

I have found a solution of sorts after a lengthy chat with Symantec tech support and they didn't charge for the call. They informed me that they are aware that in some instances this problem can occur and are working on a fix. They also said that it’s related to Anti-Spam. They suggested that I returned the NIS2004 to the retailer and purchase just NAV + Firewall as this is the only way to split out Anti-Spam. I did this although it was cheaper to buy a bundle with NAV + Spam and add Firewall and it gives the option that you can install/uninstall each part separately.

I have also discovered that the problem is related to Fast User Switching and is some how connected to the way that Windows uses off-line file handling. I installed the three components including Anti-Spam to a clean Windows install, “AFTER” switching off fast switching from user accounts. Although we don’t now have the facility to switch users and still stay logged on, it works fine when both my partner and I just log on or off:-).

All current Microsoft updates are installed for both Windows XP Pro and Office XP Standard.

This exercise was conducted with the split out components and I don't know if it will work with NIS combined.

Beware…!! If you re-enable fast switching out of curiosity, the problem comes back, even if you then disable it again and/or re-install all Norton products its still there. The only fix I know after this is to then conduct a clean Windows install and start again:-(.

Hope this helps?

Excellent news. I can easily do without the Anti-Spam bit.

Thanks Jupitor

Happy Christmas.
