i recently upgraded a pc from win98 to win2k, then reinstalled ms office 2k sr1..since then i cannot open outlook (i can if i am logged in as administrator)..when i double click the outlook icon it starts the windows installer but then stops with errors such as error 1706 and another msg about the mapi32.dll file..ive uninstalled and reinstalled office, repaired office, replaced mapi32 files and updated all office service packs .. but to no avail!! could someone please help me??

Your login ID does not have enough rights to install software. You will need to be part of the Power User group.

Log in as Administrator, and add your login ID to the Power User group. Then login as your user ID and setup your Office 2K by double clicking on the icons.

One of the things we've found is that you should install all software on 2k as an admin user or power user. I'd try beerhunter2's fix. But, that will only patch this problem.

I'd log in as the admin, and do the uninstall/reinstall then you should be able to use the program as a regular user.

You'll want to perform all other installs as an admin to get around this feature.

ctarr. Although what you say is true for most software, Outlook 2000/2002 is a different beast. It wants to do a partial install for each login profile on the system.

The only way I know of to install Outlook for a user profile is to temporarily give the user Power User status, and then remove them from Power User after Outlook has been installed.
