Steve Jones, from SQL Server Central, wrote an interesting article on outer joins causing problems for DBAs last year. I just discovered it this morning. It actually explains quite a few things about why you should sometimes put your WHERE clause filters in the ON clause of the JOIN instead of the WHERE clause.
But only on Outer Joins, not Inner.
