Hi,

For some reason my system is running out of memory. I'm a very non-techie person and I am not even sure where to start looking. What is happening is that when I run Word if I try to do anything like Print... or Page Setup... or Format Picture... it tells me that "System is out of memory or disk space". Well, disk space available is 17 GB. So I guess something must be eating up my RAM.

Will anybody have an answer for me.

Thanks,

Z

Usually, the Out of Memory error is thrown when a program tried to write to a memory block which it should not. This can happen when a program dumps it's stack because of a stack overflow.

There are other causes, but these are usually the culprit. You may want to try uninstalling then reinstalling Word/Office. Nate Gagne

Get rid of programs down on your task bar. Go to start/run/ & type in "msconfig". On the opening tab(system configuration utility)check the box "selective start-up" Then go up to very most right tab and click the "STARTUP" tab. Uncheck all but the necessary programs you will not be using. Don,t worry! They are still there in you programs menu. If you want to run them you go to your programs and click them on. I would avoid unchecking any EXE file or ones that you are unsure of.This should give you faster boot in and free some memory you are using with these programs running but technicly on stand by.

Defanatly need more info. RAM ammount OS level (Win95 or Win98). How was the system installed. Was Ghost used to "trace" over from an old hard disk? James Collins

Hi
DO a scandisk, diskcleanup & a defragmentation of harddisk. This sometimes helps, if the cause is related to swap area problems. :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for your responses. Well, like I said before I know very little tech stuff. I'm only a programmer. Please bear with me here. If somebody tells me how to get info like RAM size and other info you may need, I'll get it for you. I can get the OS and Office version. This was a new computer I got a year ago, (yeah, I know, a dinosaur, already), so I doubt Ghost was used to trace over from an old hard disk.

I've tried a couple of things already with no success, like DiskScan, Disk Cleanup and Defrag, and re-installing Word. I have not tried, though, re-installing Office.

Thx,

Goto start | settings | control panel | and then open the System applet. Under the general tab it will list your memory (RAM) and the version of your operating system.
As your machine is only about a year old you are probably running Win98 SE with about 128 megs of ram - if this is so double the amount of memory (RAM).
If problem persists try uninstalling Office , reboot, and then do a re-install.
Hope this helps you out.

check for the nimda virus if you had it and cleared it most likely your riched20.dll file was deleted and you need to copy a working copy of riched20.dll to c:\windows\system
