OT: Scrambled text in a graphic for authentication 1

Sorry for the off-topic post, hopefully someone here knows:

I have a web project that will need an authentication scheme that includes those "human readible only" graphics boxes as part of the login.

You know what I mean.....
Enter Name:
Enter Password:
Enter Characters you see in this Box: [@#$%^]

Those characters are something like "TD3k3" but are represented in squiggly characters that cannot be machine read so easily.


Q: What is that technology called so that I can google for some perl/gd modules (or PHP/gd) that can be used to implement that solution??!???!?

Yup. Further research shows that this technology is based upon the Turing test and has become parlanced as CAPTCHA, available in free scripts for Perl, PHP, and Python. Perfect for LAMP.
