We use Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2003 in cached exchange mode. This creates a large OST in the user's profile which, because it is a roaming profile, can be problematic.

Is there a problem with puting the OST file on a different path, such as in a folder on the file server, so that the profile is kept relatively small?

I thought maybe you could achieve it using *.prf files to push out specific 'generic' Outlook profile details, telling the Outlook client to reference its *.ost file from an alternative location.

however reading a *.prf template, *.ost location seems to be one of the few things it doesn't do

have a look for Outlook profile templates or *.prf files

Which part of the profile is it written to by default? Not all areas of a profile are copied to the network and this can be further controlled through GPO.

You want the OST's local in case of a network problem and to reduce the network traffic.

The OST file is created by default in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. I am not sure if this is copied back to the server or not with a roaming profile.

It would not be a problem putting the OST file elsewhere when setting up new users. However reading your comments it looks as though it would make more sense to keep them in the default location.

Thanks for your help.
