OS won't install

ABIT KT7-A
1.2GHZ Athlon T-Bird
768MB
60GB & 15GB HDD
Sony 52x cdrom
Diamond 16MB AGP
Sound Blaster LIVE
cheap NIC

problem:
I try to boot up to install some type of Windows OS, I throw in a good Win98SE bootdisk starts loading up cdrom drivers it gets down to "Device Name: MCD001" and the system just stays there and so I can't continue booting via bootdisk.

I try to install Windows 2000 Professional throw in all the bootdisks everthing works fine hard disk formatted to NTFS etc. I get past the part where the system reboots and the Win2K Pro splash screen comes up and enter the graphical system setup portion of the install where it installs the actual OS files and during the time when the setup installs devices like keyboards and mice it will go on till it's halfway done then the HDD light will flicker a couple more times and then stop and the system freezes and there is no activity what so ever.

I installed Linux on it and everything runs fine though. What could be the cause of this problem. I'd really like Win2K Pro on this machine.

Sounds like your memory may not be compatible with windows. Try some fresh new pc133 RAM chips.

I would try to install windows (especailly WINDOWS 2000)
with these changes.

1) 1 stick of RAM (256 MB's)
2) DUMP THE CHEAP NIC ( especially for Win2K)

I agree with Jakespeare, Windows maybe having problems accessing the memory during setup, install the minimum. As for the cheap NIC, if you don't wanna spend money, buy NetGear, under £20 and will work in Win2K.

I've experienced the same problem trying to install various operating systems onto a drive that was once an NTFS partition which had been wiped out using an ordinary Windows BootDisk w/ FDISK. Running FDISK and viewing the partitions showed that everything was clean and ready to go, but it wasn't... Going back and redoing everything with Partition Magic actually found partition remnants that the Bootdisks FDISK utility wasn't seeing and removing and cleaned them up. From that point on I had no problems. This has happened multiple times to me in the past on all types of installations (Windows 9x, NT, Novell) Because of this I usually carry a Partition Magic floppy in my repair kit...

Why not boot from the CD-ROM? Win2K does that.
