Hey All,

I have some questions but not sure about the answers concerning Oracle performance:

1. What sould be monitored and how often?
2. What are the techniques and actions to detect performance issues? Hopefully there are methods to interpret these that do not require getting out the calculator too much. :)
3. What actions need to be performed once a threshold that warrants change is detected?
4. What are proactive steps to maintain performance?

Can anyone recommend a book or web site that achieves the above?

Thanks,

Michael,

There is a growing cadre of automated tools that can assist in your tuning efforts, but still the best method to improve tuning is your knowledge. A great tuning book that I highly recommend is "SQL Tuning" by Dan Tow, published by O'Reilly. The book covers Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server. It is available via Amazon.com.

If/when you navigate out to Amazon.com, you will also see a variety of other books that focus specifically on tuning Oracle components (e.g., applications, tables/indexes/partitions, background processes, memory structures, et cetera). The titles and descriptions of the offerings are generally a fairly good indication of the content and applicability of the book for your needs. Any good tuning book will deal with the four points you list, above, in your original posting, and more.

After you choose a book, please post a "Book Review" here on this forum.
