I have a program that opens a cursor in an oracle 8.1.6 database. It opens it fine, but when I retrieve the information from the cursor I get the SQL error 83. All that is said about it is to run DUMPSGA. After searching I bit I found it needed to be done from svrmgrl and oradebug. When I run it, it says statement completed. I have trying to find out what it is that DUMPSGA does with no luck. The problem still error still happens after I do it. Any ideas on how to get rid of the error and what does DUMPSGA do?

There may be some memory chip problems that prevent the SGA from being correctly accessed and it is seen as corrupted...
The detail error message is:
-------------------------------------------------
ORA-00083

ORA-00083warning: possibly corrupt SGA mapped

Cause:Even though there may be SGA corruptions, the SGA was mapped.

Action:Use the "dumpsga" command to dump the SGA.
--------------------------------------------------------
Given the implications of corrupted memory areas I would turn this over to Oracle Support, especially if this is a production system.
