Hello,

I'm a newby Oracle Admin, and I need some concept explanation about Oracle HA. We use Sun Solaris 8 and Oracle 8.1.7.

I need to evaluate different Oracle HA options like Sun Cluster with Oracle HA, Oracle OPS, Oracle RAC, etc...

Which are the main differences between these solutions?

What happens with Oracle processes on a Sun Cluster HA implementation when the primary node fails? I know that the cluster will start the service on the other node, but if the processes died because a server crash or whatever, will an oracle recovery have to be made?

Thanks in advance,

jmiturbe

Version 8.1.7 of Oracle does not support RAC, therefore you cannot compare to Sun Cluster.

OPS is not the same as RAC.

Sure, the same way as Oracle 8i is not the same as Oracle 9i :). OPS was more buggy and less stable, but the idea was the same: multiple instances working (optionally) on different boxes and sharing the same database.

Yes, multiple instances sharing the same ONE database <> RAC.

So what does so significantly differ an OPS from RAC? Is RAC capable to serve more than 1 database?
Of course cache fusion and other improvements are greate , but I still suppose that RAC is more a new brand than a new product. Could you share your opposite opinion?
