gurus
I am trying to solve the subject problem. I am a beginner, so I need your help to solve it. If you gurus please advice me, why do we get this error and which area we should take care to avoid getting this error message? (OS- Windows 2k advanced, oracle 9.2)

Your help on above will be much helpful.

Thanks in advance

Shafi, Salam.

I see you are experiencing at least 5 problems:

thread759-962393 -- Ora-01034: Oracle Not Available
thread759-962394 -- Ora-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist
thread759-962395 -- Ora-125540: TNS: no listener
thread759-962396 -- TNS: 12560: Protocol Adapter error
thread759-962397 -- Oracle networking

I understand that you are just getting started with Oracle, and you are trying to teach yourself what is necessary to learn Oracle. The problem is, this site is for reserved for technical questions from professionals that have already moved past the beginning stages of Oracle familiarity. I am telling you all this in case you look for your threads and they have suddenly disappeared. That means that someone has determined that your questions are "student" questions, which are specifically disallowed here.

Another problem is I cannot determine with certainty what version of Oracle you are running. In your thread, "thread759-962397 -- Oracle networking", you say your are using Oracle 9.2; in your thread "thread759-962396 -- TNS: 12560: Protocol Adapter error", you suggest you are using Oracle 8.1.7.

Could you please confirm the following:

1) What version of Oracle server you installed on your machine that you designated as the server?

2) What version(s) of Oracle client did you install on your non-server computers?

3) Did you use the "Oracle Installer" to install your server and clients?

4) Were there any error that resulted during the Oracle server or client installations?

5) When you were installing your Oracle server, did you request that the installer create a database for you?

6) What is the name of the database that you created?

7) Does a "Windows Service" exist for your Oracle server? (To determine this: Start..Settings..Control Panel..Administrative Tools..Services, then confirm that there is a service named "OracleService(SID)", where (SID) is the name of the Oracle database/instance that you created and hope to use.) What is the name of the Oracle SID that you found in the OracleService(SID) name?

8) Does a "Windows Service" exist for your Oracle Listener? (Locate the Listener Service in the same manner as you did to confirm the OracleService(SID) in Step 7, above. That service typically appears as "Oracle(Home/version)Listener". If it exists, please confirm the actual name of that service.

9) In your "thread759-962395 -- Ora-125540: TNS: no listener", you said, "I have checked my listener in the database server and it’s running and the test is ok from net manager," could you please be more specific about what exact test you did to confirm that both the Oracle Server and the Oracle Listener are up and running? What test from Net Manager did you do that responded "OK"?

10) Can you please confirm the value for your system variables, "ORACLE_HOME" and "ORACLE_SID"? To confirm these values, please issue from your Windows operating system prompt (DOS command promopt). [An excerpt of my results appears here]:
Code:
D:\ set
...
ORACLE_HOME=D:\Oracle\Ora92
ORACLE_SID=DHUNT
...

11) Once you confirm the value for your ORACLE_HOME system variable, issue the following commands from your DOS command prompt:
Code:
cd %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin
dir
If a file named "tnsnames.ora" results from the "dir" command, then please copy-and-paste the contents of your "tnsnames.ora" here into this thread. (You can use Notepad or some other standard editing program to copy the text for pasting here.)

Your responses to these questions should give enough information for us to begin troubleshooting the many issues you seem to be facing. (Please confirm your timezone or GMT/UTC offset in hours so that we know during what hours you are most likely to be available for contact here on Tek-Tips.)

Also, to avoid having this thread and your other threads removed from this forum, you must confirm somehow that your are currently some form of computer professional.
