I am trying to install sotware using a pcmcia card. I have used card pro 9 to format and install software.
I have tried a few different pcmcia cards. All sandisk 64mb and 128mb.

BUG6334: Could not initiate PCMCIA ATA Driver.
Reason: Device init failed for device a:

Do you have PDT access? If you do try to format the pcmcia from there and then run CardPro again. Did that get formatted on a Win2K machine?

First of all, Format the cards on a Windows 95/98 PC as a fat partition. Don't use the Windows 2000 or XP (Don't know about Vista?)operating systems.

If you have any Compact Flash cards, then try & format them on a non Windows system such as a digital camera which uses CF as it's storage drive. My Canon A70 works a treat for restoring them!.

What you have described is a known problem. It might be wise to plug them into another Nortel system to test, or try it on a Miran, Media Card (If you have one!).

I did a FAQ on formatting them via "pdt".

All the best

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

I have pdt access but it doesnt show up under devs. I formatted with my digital camera and I will try it out. I will still need to use cardpro9 to load the software correct? Thats how I have always done it.

I would format it, put a few files there, then put it in the machine to see if devs sees it and you can see the files.

I formatted my pcmcia cards using my digital camera. Then I plugged them into the ssc to make sure devs in pdt could see the cards. It did. Then I used card pro9 to program the pcmcia card and when I put it back in the ssc slot a: it couldn’t see the pcmcia card again. I then used another pcmcia card that was formatted with my digital camera and unzipped the software file to a folder. Then I copied and pasted all the install files to the pcmcia card. Finally this method worked and I was able to install the software on my ssc card.

Sandisk compact flash 32mb and 64mb

Thanks everyone for your input on this.

I guess having a few compact flash cards to work with always helps!

You can also use win98 to format.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

The bulletin that warns you not to format with Windows XP or Windows 2000 does say that you can use the CMD prompt to format CF cards.

Code:
FORMAT volume /FS:FAT

I regularly format PCMCIA/CF cards on my Windows XP laptop without issue.

A word of warning: Don't ever delete anything on a PCMCIA/CF with Windows as Windows will create the Recycle Bin on the PCMCIA/CF card, and vxWorks doesn't like that.

If you need to delete something, then "MOVE" it (Cut & Paste) to another drive, then delete it. This will prevent Windows from creating the Recycle Bin on the PCMCIA/CF card.

You can download from the Nortel PIC the PCMCIA CARD PROGRAMMER
