Basically my setup is as follows...

AMD64 3000
Gigabyte G8KNS mobo
1.5gig DDR3200
Gforce6600

Now I've been given the option of pretty much getting a free opteron swap for my machine and I like the geekiness of having a dual processor system though I could pay a little and do a swap for a dual core system (as payment for doing some work for a mate he'll upgrade my system).

I mainly do a lot of video editing work on top of getting into Java programming and a bit of gaming hehe.

Anyone want to offer their advice/opinion.

Thanks!!!)

Video editing is without question an application that will benefit greatly from either dual core or dual processor.
Personally, although I know that video has traditionally been the reserved playground of Intel, I do believe that the latest dual core offerings from AMD are well worth their price. AMD seems to have a better implementation of dual core than Intel, and the performance benchmarks I read every now and then do not show any change.
So I would suggest a dual core upgrade. And, if you really want to feel geeky, get yourself a dual processor dual core system ! The cost is uncomparable, but the speed might just be demonic.

Pascal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Opteron require a different chipset like Socket 940 instead of Socket 939?

Dual-procs are great for mutlitasking freaks, such as myself. The biggest benefit I've noticed is that I can still use my PC for other things while burning a DVD or encoding audio/video. Also, certain applications like Adobe Premiere are designed to take advantage of it too.

Just some additional food for thought...

One of these days i am going to build a new system and probably go for at least a dual-core. On the other hand, i have my little MSI neo2 mobo with a p4 2.4 cpu and i burn dvds and do other tasks at the same time. I admit i have to be careful, though. Not the same as the outfits you guys are talking about. And i dont think i could encode audio\video and do other tasks, too cheap to find out, lol.

The Opterons may well be 940, but the X2 line is socket 939. A nice upgrade from a 64 3500, for example.
Of course, for dual core dual processor goodness, the Opteron is the way and that means a socket 940 mainboard. Unless the X2 can do dual CPU also.

Yeah, I don't believe they have dual CPU motherboards in socket 939, which would rule out the option of two X2's.

But the reason why I mentioned 940, is because the user is getting a free Opteron and will need to make the upgrade of the motherboard as well.

You can have both with socket 940, as there is a line of dual-core Opterons as well. The dual-core Opterons are the x65, x70, and x75 lines (though there will be some with x8x designations coming soon) and all of them have the Italy core. If you get a pair of dual-core Opterons, you would have quite a screamer, assuming that you had a use for that much processing power.

hmmm thanks for your opinions guys, defo food for thought there.)
