After running Microsoft's SP3 for Windows 2000 install, I had a very unpleasant experience. During the start of the boot the message was ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt! Upon running the the recovery procedures and having no backup tape (had recovery disk), I came to the conclusion that the ntoskrnl was corrupt (boot.ini was correct) I am now doing a clean install. Here is my problem. I have two other domain controllers up and running and handling things for now. How can I restore this computer back to Operations Master? I have seen other posts about seizing the role. Should I run the ntdsutil.exe to seize the role back after the re-install? Should I promote this computer first to be a domain controller? Can this be done? Is there an article or post that can take me through step by step? I know have to hack out the OM is a very bad thing, but I had no choice!

Thanks in advance!

This machine was the first machine in the Domain. We use one domain for the whole company. The rest of the servers are trees off of the machine that died. I did re-join the machine with dcpromo as another server on the domain, not as the first machine (probably not the right thing to do). I am using the same host name again. I am noticing that the Master Browser function shows the computers in my subnet only (expected). Question, should I run the ntdsutil from another domain controller? I tried to run it from the restored machine. I could not connect to the server (locally errored out - not enough endpoints?).

Thanks!

I also had this corrupt or missing file message whilst experimenting with sgi graphic cards.

I found clearing the Cmos restored everything back to a clean boot. Still can't explain why though.

After further research from a previous post, I was able to seize control, and re-establish this server as FSMO. The only problem I have now is an error occurring in the Directory Service Event log 1126 Unable to establish connection with global catalog. Any ideas here? As usual Microsoft leaves this error hanging as "this is a known error" with no solution.
