OpenSSH 4.0p1 not allowing me login?

Hello, I just upgraded OpenSSH to the latest version (4.0p1) on my Slackware box; however, it doesn't let me login? Using an SSH client I can connect just fine to the machine from within or from without my local network. However, when I try to authenticate (i.e. user/password), it always gives me a permission denied error? Any thoughts?

PS: I have tried creating a new dummy user account and password after having upgraded OpenSSH and still permission denied.

Ok, I forgot that on Slackware you needed to use this command because of password authentication:

LIBS=-lcrypt ./configure
make
make install

However, OpenSSH 4.0p1 still does NOT authenticate having configured it to use the lcrypt() function instead. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas please let me know. For now, I've reverted to the older version of OpenSSH.
