I have a 98SE machine and an XP HE machine "successfully" networked together via a crossover cable.

The following works correctly:

* can fully access the 98 drives from the XP machine
* can see the XP machine and all shares from the 98 machine
* can ping the XP machine via name and IP address from the 98 machine
* can map shares from the 98 machine on the XP machine
* I can access the internet on the 98 machine via ICS through the XP machine
* I can play networked games (via IP) between the machines

The following does NOT work correctly:

* cannot open(Explore) any XP shares from the 98 machine
(does not work with name or IP address)
* cannot map any XP shares as drives on the 98 machine
(does not work with name or IP address)

In both of the things I canNOT do, I get the following message:

<nameofresourcehere> is not accessible. Not enough memory is available. Quit some programs.

I have 256MB ram and this happens even if I've just booted up and have quit all extraneous tasks...so I think it's not really a memory issue.

Any clues from you networking gurus out there?

Thanks!

I take it you have shared some resources on XP machine (ie, not just default shares like C$?). Is simplified sharing enabled? (it is by default on XP) - if not, you're probably best enabling it, then setting up shares (alternative if disabled is to set up user a/c on XP machine with same name/password as you use to logon to win98 machine). Hope this helps - post back if not.

Yes, shares have been established on the XP machine (at varying levels on the C drive...root, various folders, etc.). I get the same result with all of them. As far as I understand it, it IS using Simplified Sharing (I believe that's the default for Home Edition...which is what I'm using).

Thanks...

I finally found a solution to this problem!!

I was messing around in the event logging services in XP and thought I'd look at the messages when I tried to access my XP shares from the Win 98 side (the point at which I'd receive an error message).

I found this message in the "System" events:

The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this parameter.

I then found the following KnowledgeBase article at Microsoft that told me what to do:

It said to increase the value of the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\IRPStackSize

It was set to hex B and could only go up to hex C. I changed it to C (12) and voila, I was in business!

I also saw in the messages that I was connecting as "Guest" instead of my Win98 logon of "David". Consequently, or for some other reason, I can only see certain subfolders within the XP shares but on others I get Access Denied messages. For instance, I can get to the All Users documents and settings folder but not to "David"s folders (even though I'm "David" on both the 98 and XP machines).

So, I hope that helps someone and now if anyone can get me past the "David" vs. "Guest" issue, I'd appreciate the help!

Thanks!
