Opening excel file

I am sure I am missing something fairly simple, but for some reason I can no longer open an excel file by clicking on it. Excel opens, but the file does not. If I open excel and the use file open it works fine.

Are you clicking on it or double clicking on it? You should be double clicking on it.

Sorry, I am double clicking. Word files open OK when double clicking, it is just excel files that do not open.

We are having the same problem with 2 computers in our network. Excel will open, but existing files do not. Where the spreadsheet should visibly appear, you just see the underlying desktop wallpaper. We can see all of the toolbars, but nothing below them. What causes this? Help, it is driving us crazy!!!!!!!!!!!
