Opening A Servers Share by Computer Alternate (Alias)

I swear this was working just a few weeks ago before fully security patching all our 600 W2000 and Win2003 servers.

[Set Up]
(1) Server name is "MyServer" and is in domain "MyDomain.com"

(2) Server registers correctly in DNS and WINS

[Issue]

I want the server to display and allow share access by using alternate server names such as,

"AliasOne"

To do that, I set up static DNS and WINS entries mapping "AliasOne" to the actual IP address of the server.

Now, When I open a "Start" "Run" on my workstation and key in, "\\AliasOne", I expect a window to open displaying the shares my account has access to as if I actually typed the actual server name or IP address in the "Start" "Run" box.

What I get is either "duplicate name exists on network" or a window that opens minus the shares.

Any Ideas on why this is not working?

Thanks,
Jeff Yenco

Click Start->Run->CMD

Type the following lines exactly from the command prompt (misspelling won't generate an error):

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
START DEVMGMT.MSC

In the window that opens, Click View/Show all hidden devices.
Navigate to your Network Adapters. Uninstall any that are showing as tranparent icons.
Reboot.

You might also try
Start->Run->CMD /K IPCONFIG /Release
IPCONFIG /Renew

I had a similar problem when i tried to use an alias/cname in dns. by making the alias an A record fixed the problem for me. so i have 2 or more A records pointing to the same IP.
