When I browse to use an app not in the list, the app does not appear and explorer won't let me use it to open a document.

Any ideas?

Cheers Bill.

If I understand correctly, you're looking to open a file with an application not listed in the "Open With" list? And there is no browse option?

I don't know a specific fix but you should be able to work around this...

1. Go to Windows Explorer
2. Tools/File Options
3. Choose the "File Types" tab
4. Click "New"
5. Add the file extension
6. Click the "Change" button while the new extension is highlighted.
7. This will bring up the "Open with" box, it SHOULD have the capability to "Browse" out and find the application

Hmmm... it HAS the browse option, but selecting an app has no effect - it does not appear in the list of apps you can use...

At the bottom of the list should be a "button" that says "Browse". Click on that, and find the program you want to open WITH. ("Notepad.exe" for example). Click on the program, and it will be added to the list of selectable programs.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear:

> It HAS the browse option, but selecting an app has no effect > - it does not appear in the list of apps you can use...

When I do exactly what you say, the app does not appear in the list of selectable programs!...

The list of enumerated programs in that list are drawn from applications that already are associated with a registered file extension.

Use Folder Options, File Types:

. Either modify an extising registered file type so that it opens with your application; or,

. Add a new file type, and set its open properties to point to your application.

This DOES work, but what I really want to do is fix my 'open with' dialog, I used to use it a lot!...

Stick a shortcut to the application in the Send To folder of your profile. Then Right Click on the file and 'Send To' the app.

try adding a key here

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\OpenWithList]

Xavier, I've had a look, there is already a key there with a bunch of items under it - excel, notepad etc... Confused!

Yeah, I just created a new key in there and it doesn't appear to work, but I didn't reboot.

Create a key for the program you want to run out of the open with option and reboot, then see if your option is there.
