Hi,

I'm running QuarkXpress 5.01 on Mac OS 9.2.2.

The problem occurs when I start up Quark and try to open an existing document. The default path is set to the Macintosh HD but if I select the desktop (via the drop down list or the desktop button), the timer icon appears and the whole program freezes. The same thing happens if I have a new document open and I try to use get picture/text, and try to browse files on the desktop. (I can browse other folders with no trouble)

I have tried all the obvious things like deleting my preferences, turning preview off and even reinstalling the program completely. I have also tried changing extensions around and deleting the mac os system preferences.

I would be grateful if anyone can come up with a solution. This problem even has Quark technical support baffled!!

I have exactly the same problem. OS 9.2.2 Quark Xpress 5.01. I have deleted files, reinstalled etc. I have not been able to find an answer. For some reaseon I think it may have to do with file sharing/networking.(not sure)

It could be. I have 2 NT shared folders on my desktop as well as a shared folder from another mac. I have however tried disconnecting these but the problem still exists!

I also tried rebuilding my desktop, which had no effect.

With regards to shared stuff... I have had issues in the past where stuff is linked to something in a shared folder. One of my Macs wouldn't start up at all untill I located the linked file and got rid of it. I'll have a hunt around and see if its a similar problem...

I have a Shared folder from a windows 2000 machine and a shared folder from a mac OS X machine on my desktop.

I have disconnected, rebuilt, trashed preferences etc. with no success.

Its now been 2 weeks and I have still not heard anything back from Quark support on this! This also means that I'v been unable to create any documents for 2 weeks and I'm losing business from this.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

I'm adding to the throng. I'm running QXP 3.3, OS8 on a G3. Suddenly three docs won't open. Other docs open and I can create new ones, however, when I try to open a particular doc the program freezes. I see the "watch" and it stays on until I re-start.
?????

I have had the same problem with Quark 5.1 freezing when I try to access picture files on the desktop. I called Quark Xpress tech support and they were not able to help me. This is obviously a strange bug in the program which Quark does not want to acknowledge. If anyone has found a solution, please reply to this post.

I have been having a problem in Quark when I try to access pictures from any desktop source. I have repeatedly been unable to in spite of trying all known Macintosh problem solving routines.

I just discovered that my program sharing was turned on under file sharing in the control panels. When I turned program sharing off and restarted Quark, the problem went away. I was able to access the desktop.

I do not recall ever turning program sharing on. This problem began for me on Friday, December 19, 2003. I had been using version 5.1 for some time and never had this happen until then.

Maybe this will help some of you who've had the same problem.

Phil, I removed Quark 5.01 and reinstalled 5.0 (not 5.01) and the problem has gone away. Not sure what the .01 update does but it seemed to be causing the problem on my end. I can now "get picture" from the desktop and networked drives as well.

It may be worth a try.
