Hi!

When I'm using Windows NT explorer to open a Word/Excel file on local drive, it takes quite a while initially to open up the file. But subsequent attempt to open the same file is fast.

If I'm using Microsoft Word/Excel to open the same file, the speed of opening is quite normal too.

Does anyone encounter this problem before?

Thanks!

This covers two seperate issues:

1. Slow opening from explorer. This could be down to the number of file types that explorer has to search through before it finds the application that can open the data file. The more applications installed the slower it will be. The number of file associations can be found out by running Windows Explorer, then View, Options, File types. If you want to reduce the number of file asociations, make sure that you only remove associations from applications that you KNOW have been deleted. Dont remove any that you dont know.

2. Fast access second time around. Windows uses caching to speed up access of recently used data. Therefore the second time a file is opened will often be quicker as it is access from the RAM cache, which has a faster access time, rather than the disk.
