The only thing that opens is my pallets. I can see my wallpaper and my pallets, that's it. I am using AI 9.

Only Pallets Open Up

File/New or Command/N on the mac will open a new document.
File/Open or Command/O will let you find an existing document to open.
File/Open Recent will show you the last few documents that were opened in Illustrator & highlighting one will open it.
